What is Web Chat?

Web Chat is a communications application which allows you to "chat" to someone in real time by typing your message into the preview window. Web Chat can only function with two or more people accessing the application at any one time. The Web Chat facility is ideal for situations where people are located in different areas and they wish to conduct a meeting.
Once the Chat screen fills up with text it disappears from the screen. Web Chats are not archived so messages are discarded once they leave the screen.

How do I start chatting?

Most Web Chats in Infoxchange websites are in password-restricted areas and can only be used by members of the website's intranet. For more information about becoming a member, see Registration and Members

To start chatting:
  1. Log into the intranet as usual.
  2. Select Web Chat from the menu. Web Chat will open in a new window.
  3. At the bottom of the chat screen is the message bar. If your screen is set to a smaller resolution you may need to scroll down to see this message bar. Click in message bar and start typing your message.
  4. When you have finished your message, hit the Enter key for your message to appear in the chat window above the message bar.

How does Web Chat recognise who I am?

The Web Chat recognises your registration username.
When you registered for the Intranet you filled in a username and password. It is a good idea to make your username as similar to your name as possible, so that other people who are using Web Chat know who you are.

How can I see who else is using Web Chat?

One of the features of the Web Chat is the ability to see other people accessing the Chat. This is helpful in making sure everyone is looking at the Chat at the right time for a meeting or informal chat. Click on the "Who is on?" button on the right side of the Chat screen. This will supply you with a list of the usernames who are currently using Web Chat, the channel on which they are connected and the IP address of their machine. It will also give you the total number of people using Web Chat at that moment.

How can I change the appearance of Web Chat?

You can change the background colour, font and font size, which can be helpful if you are finding the Chat hard to read. To make changes to the appearance of Web Chat:
  1. Go to the right side of the Chat screen above the "Who is on" button.
  2. In the three drop down boxes select the relevant settings.
(Move your mouse over the registration form to view an explanation of the fields).

How do I exit Web Chat?

Close the Web Chat window by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner of the window.
